A month later after the Flotilla incident that caused the death of 9 Turkish activists and diplomatic tensions between Israel and Turkey, a new flotilla could sail on the water of the Mediterranean Sea en route to Gaza. Young Lebanese journalists and activists will take part to this new expedition that could be a further element of tension in the already unstable Middle East. To know more about the reasons and motivations that could push young people in participating to this kind of dangerous and radical act of protest, I met Z., a 22-year-old Lebanese female journalist living in Beirut.

A month later after the Flotilla incident that caused the death of 9 Turkish activists and diplomatic tensions between Israel and Turkey, a new flotilla could sail on the water of the Mediterranean Sea to break the Israeli naval block on the Gaza Strip. According to the organizers - the “Free Palestine Movement” and the Lebanese association “Reporters without Bounds” – the flotilla directed to Gaza could depart from the northern city of Tripoli, in Lebanon, within days or even hours, “carrying activists, journalists and humanitarian supplies”.

Da quando l’esercito israeliano ha attaccato la flottiglia di navi diretta a Gaza, essere vicini ad una causa o appartenenti ad una bandiera – rispettivamente la causa palestinese e la bandiera dello Stato di Israele - potrebbe rendere difficile osservare elementi che, analizzati a distanza e da un punto neutrale, possono rivelarsi importanti per fare luce su quanto successo. Oltre a voler recapitare gli aiuti umanitari di cui Gaza ha tremendamente bisogno, la spedizione della “Freedom Flotilla” aveva lo scopo di forzare il blocco navale che Israele esercita su Gaza. Infatti, se le NGO internazionali lo considerano illegale, per Israele il blocco è il miglior modo per prevenire il rifornimento militare di Hamas – come successo in passato.

At present moment the details remain unknown, but it is certain that the consequences of the attack launched against international Gaza aid flotilla will negatively affect Israel’s image in the world. It ended in blood on the ‘Freedom Flotilla’, a group of ships belonging to European NGOs en route to Gaza with the intention to break the Israeli naval block and deliver humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population. The last reports says 10 activists killed and 26 injured, six of them Israeli soldiers.

Al momento i dettagli rimangono sconosciuti, ma è certo che le conseguenze dell’attacco sferrato stamani alla flottiglia internazionale diretta a Gaza, segnerà negativamente la già compromessa immagine di Israele nel mondo. Il rischio maggiore è quello di perdere la tradizionale e forte alleanza con quella che oggi è una potenza regionale, la Turchia. Si è conclusa nel sangue l’avventura della ‘Freedom Flotilla’, un gruppo di imbarcazioni appartenenti ad organizzazioni non governative europee in rotta verso Gaza per rompere l’assedio marittimo israeliano e portare aiuti umanitari alla popolazione palestinese. Il bilancio attuale è di 10 morti tra gli attivisti e 26 feriti, sei dei quali soldati israeliani.
